The Rolf® Method of Structural Integration is a systematic bodywork approach that
restores balance to the entire body by changing its structure, function, and energy.
Thus, a natural state of alignment and flexibility is found. Long periods of one-sided
positions like sitting at a computer, driving, or standing at a job stress the body resulting
in chronic neck and back pain or other physical problems. Traumas from car accidents,
falls, surgeries, and sports injuries can also lead to stiffness and pain in the muscles
and joints. Rolfing is widely regarded as being one of the best ways to deal with these
problems.
A variety of deep muscular manipulation, guided movement, and breath is utilized to
facilitate fascial release of emotional and physical strain patterns. The fascia, rather
like the membranes within an orange, wraps the muscles and gives them their shape.
In its optimal state, fascia is fluid and flexible. Circumstances such as emotional or
physical trauma, habitual postures, repetitive movements, attitudes, and beliefs can
cause the fascia to shorten, thicken, or adhere in response. This sets up a progression
of compensation patterns and distortions that build upon themselves. Rolfing works
to bring the fascia back to its natural flexibility, altering the shape of muscles so new
patterns of movement can be created and optimal relationship with gravity is fostered.
Rolfing reduced the chronic tightness and pain in my neck, shoulders, and feet, while
teaching me correct body alignment.
