Local Food Dollars
Eating Local is Easy with Local Food Dollars
For Eat Local Week, you can use special Local Food Dollars to purchase local dishes and food products at participating restaurants and grocery stores. Each “dollar” is a $2.50 voucher. There’s no money back for using part of the “dollar,” but you can add up $2.50 to cover your local food purchases.
Example:
- Exchange one Local Food Dollar for a $2.00 muffin made with local flour
- Use 6 Local Food Dollars (worth $15.00) to pay for a $13.00 local dish at a local restaurant
- Use 3 Local Food Dollars (worth $7.50) and $1.50 in cash to pay for $9.00 worth of local products at Durango Natural Foods or Nature’s Oasis
Local Food Dollars encourage people seek out local dishes and products and highlight local businesses that are helping to strengthen our local food economy.
Use Local Food Dollars at Restaurants
Participating restaurants are crafting special local food dishes for Eat Local Week. For each local dish you purchase, 25% will go to support Local First, La Plata County’s locally-owned, independent business alliance that works with local farmers, restaurants, and stores to support the local food economy.
Participating restaurants include:
- Cocina Linda, 309 West. College Drive, 259-6729
- Durango Coffee Company, 730 Main Avenue, 259-2059
- Durango Natural Food, 575 East 8th Avenue, 247-8129
- Zia Taqueria, 3101 Main Avenue, 247-3355
- Carvers Brewing Company, 1022 Main Avenue, 259-2545
- Cyprus Café, 725 East 2nd Avenue, 385-6884
- Cosmopolitan, 919 Main Avenue, 259-2898
- Guido’s Favorite Foods, 1201 Main Avenue, 259-5028
- Ore House, 147 East College Drive, 247-5707
- Purple Haze Bar & Grill, 117 West College, 259-1900
Use Local Food Dollars for Local Products
You can also use Local Food Dollars as coupons at the register of Durango Natural Foods and Nature’s Oasis (or with select vendors at the Farmer’s Market) to pay for select local products such as Honeyville honey, Blue Horizon Flour, and Waves of Grain granola. (At the Farmers Market look for signs saying “Local Food Dollars Accepted Here.”) During Eat Local Week 5% of all purchases of these products will go to support Local First.
