Desert Sun is technically a wholesale coffee roaster, choosing to roast only certified organic and fair trade coffees. Now if that is all we are, then how could we survive or inspire people to drink our coffee? Desert Sun is much more… Located in the mountains of Southwest Colorado, we are a small company with very committed “beans” (that’s what I call my partners in crime, the people who work with me). We care about our coffee in ways that a poet cares about words. We feel it’s our duty to bring the best out of each bean we roast (the actual coffee, not the employees). We get excited about where the coffee comes from. We get excited about the preparation of coffee. We get excited about explaining the nuances that we taste in our coffees. Being in the mountains inspires us, which is why we set up shop in Durango. We love the outdoors and yearn to spend more time in it. We love our dogs, great food, loud music, and imbibing in our favorite spirits. We find our business to be an outlet for creativity because the cultivation of FINE coffee is an art, not simply a job. It’s never dull in our roastery because we constantly strive to find new ways and ideas of coaxing that special flavor from our coffees. Our work is never ending, and it never will be, because GREAT coffee is not a place to get to, it is a place to come from.
